Why Study Music as an Adult

Many adults often feel discouraged from trying to learn an instrument later in life. Some believe they won’t be as good as someone who took music lessons as a child, while others simply don’t think music schools offer lessons for them. The reality is, adults actually have several advantages when it comes to learning music that younger students don’t have.

  1. Adults already have a good understanding of music. Kids need extra time to learn rhythm and timing. Adults have been listening to music their entire lives, so they know what songs are supposed to sound like. You can walk into your music lesson and be able to pick up songs faster because you’ve listened to them before.
  2. Adults have the determination to practice. It can be a struggle to get kids to practice their instrument outside of their music lesson. Adults have more focus and discipline to sit down and review what they’ve learned. Adults also have more life experience, which can help them figure out the perfect method to help them succeed in learning an instrument.
  3. Adults can better understand musical concepts. If you tell an adult the rules of a scale, they will understand and accept it. A child is more likely to question rules and have a harder time fully grasping them. The only disadvantage here is that adults are often sticklers for perfection, which can cause frustration at times.
  4. Adults definitely want to learn their instrument. Sometimes, parents can be the driving force behind a child starting to learn an instrument. Adults choose to study music on their own so they don’t feel like the instrument was pushed onto them at all. This makes for a more motivated student.

Even if childhood passed you by years ago, it’s never too late to learn an instrument.
